Mountain View, CA-based Codeium, an AI-powered coding platform, recently secured $150 million in Series C funding, reaching a $1.25 billion valuation to enhance developer productivity by expanding support for programming languages and offering a secure self-hosted installation option.
The funding round was led by General Catalyst, with existing investors Kleiner Perkins and Greenoaks also participating. This investment brings Codeium’s total funding to $243 million since its inception in 2021.
The coding startup plans to use the funds to accelerate the development of new features and products while expanding its workforce. The company’s platform, which leverages generative AI models trained on public code, aims to reduce inefficiencies in software development and boost developer productivity.
Innovative Solutions for Developers
Founded by CEO Varun Mohan and Douglas Chen, both MIT graduates, Codeium offers a flexible AI-powered coding platform. The platform supports over 70 programming languages and integrates seamlessly with over 40 Integrated Developer Environments (IDEs), including Visual Studio Code and JetBrains.
In just two years, Codeium has grown its user base to over 700,000 active developers and reached eight figures in annual recurring revenue (ARR). The company has achieved a remarkable 500 percent ARR growth since early 2024. Codeium’s AI platform processes over 100 billion tokens daily. It has been integrated into production workflows at major companies like Zillow, Dell, and Anduril.
Codeium Competing with Industry Giants
The platform competes directly with GitHub Copilot and other AI-powered coding assistants. The company’s unique approach provides context-specific code suggestions, reducing the manual effort required to integrate AI-generated code into existing projects. Codeium offers a generous free tier to attract developers, which has proven successful in building its user base.
Understanding the importance of data security, Codeium offers a self-hosted installation option alongside its standard SaaS plan. This allows companies to deploy the service on their own hardware or adopt a hybrid setup, ensuring their proprietary code remains secure while benefiting from Codeium’s AI capabilities.
Codeium’s success in raising $150 million and achieving unicorn status highlights the growing demand for AI-powered solutions in software development. The company is well-positioned to lead the industry with continued innovation and a focus on security.
